Just in Time (JIT) English
As in business, economy in communication is the order of the day. A lot has been said about the SMS language that seems to be emerging now in the blogosphere, tweetosphere and the airwaves carrying text messages. We are all aware of this phenomenon and we will not dwell on this in this article.
Folks only want to learn just that portion of the language as will enable them to get through the next moment. If they have previous knowledge of the language that still lingers in their mind it is only a bonus.
The manifestation of Just in Time (JIT) English is more pronounced in learners of English who have English as Second Language (ESL). The sway of native English speakers has slowly but inexorably ebbed. The ESL learners are not enamored of native speakers anymore and they just want to get the work done. They want to learn English as it deals with work in progress. They are not looking to become English pundits. These sentiments are the genesis of the courses like Business English, Workplace English, Travel related English, and indeed JIT English.
But what of the standardized tests of English? They are a necessary evil to get past. You would need a good score in TOEFL or IELTS if you ever fancy your chances of getting into a good college in US, UK, Australia or Canada. And let’s face it. The best colleges offering quality education still happen to be in the countries just mentioned. So, although you may think that quick-fix English is the way forward, looks like the colleges do not think similarly. But is life all about getting past standardized tests? Of course not. It is for this reason that more and more centers offering specialized English modules although do have JIT English courses but are balancing their repertoire with courses aimed at helping a learner getting past standardized tests.
We at Englishprep.com don’t believe that the tests are a necessary evil. We believe that the preparation for these tests readies you – wittingly or unwittingly – to be a better English communicator. Our specialized English course like Business English does just what the name suggests. It teaches you how to communicate well in a business environment. But it also lets you master your English reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills. What’s more, the courses are online and tutor-led and you can plug into the course anytime and from anywhere. The online format of the course allows you to go at your own pace. That is what makes it Just in Time English.
