IELTS Speaking Test
International English Language Testing System commonly known as IELTS is an international standardized test of English proficiency. The IELTS is divided into two versions: The Academic version and the General training version. The Academic version is for students who aspire to enroll in colleges as well as for professionals such as doctors and nurses who want to study or practice in English-speaking country. The General training version is for people planning to engage in non – academic training, gaining work experience as well as for immigration purposes. The IELTS tests scrutinize the candidates’ ability to listen, write, read and speak in English.
IELTS speaking test is comprised of three sections. The first section is like an interview round where the candidate is asked about general topic such as name, hobbies, family, native place, interests etc. It is a series of short questions, and short responses are required. In the second section of the IELTS speaking test, the test taker is given a topic card and is asked to speak on the given topic. The second section is to assess the candidate’s is ability and fluency to construct long sentences in English. The third section of the IELTS speaking test is a discussion between the candidate and the examiner where the examiner prompts the candidate with series of questions related to the theme spoken in section 2.
The IELTS speaking test requires the candidate to have a certain level of vocabulary to express themselves. Grammatical skills, accuracy and pronunciation play a very crucial role. In all the three sections of the IELTS speaking test, candidate should try to make as few grammatical errors as possible and get around any vocabulary gaps without any hesitations. The ability to use English pronunciation features like stress and intonation clearly as well as naturally is crucial in this section.
