IELTS Listening
International English Language Testing System, commonly referred to as IELTS is an international standardized test on English language proficiency. There are four sections in the IELTS test : Listening, reading, speaking and writing . It is used by colleges to evaluate the student’s English skill in all the four modules. IELTS is taken by people who aspire to study or work in a country where English is the language of communication. It is accepted by most of the academic institutions and various professional organizations in Australia, British, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa.
The IELTS listening part is divided into four sections. The section may be a dialogue or a monologue. The test is played in a recorder and the questions must be answered while listening. The student needs to be very attentive as the test is played only once. But time is given for the candidates to analyze their answers. The time allotted for answering the listening section is 40 minutes: 30 minutes for listening and answering the recordings and 10 minutes for translating answers to the OMR sheets.
Listening comprehension maybe one of the most arduous task for most of the learners of English as a foreign language. Listening skills can be improved. It is a skill and not a gift, so you can easily improve it by constant practice. Since in the test, you will hear the recording only once, you need to concentrate really hard. You need to learn how to get past diversions from distractions while listening as the recording will not be paused at anytime during the test. You can improve your listening skills by listening while reading, listening to an English radio station or by getting yourself a tutor .
