English Prepositions
In simple terms, English prepositions are words that show the relationship between nouns. It explains the location, space and time in a sentence. English prepositions are used to indicate locations in the physical world. They link elements of a sentence together. They play a very important part in the English language.
We have about 150 prepositions in English. In English we have three types of prepositions: Time prepositions, place prepositions, and direction prepositions. They are further classified into simple and compound prepositions. Simple Prepositions are single words and they are short, generally containing six letters or fewer. The compound prepositions as the name implies, are made up of more than one word.
Prepositions are important in English. Sentences would sound awkward and the meaning would be incomplete without prepositions. There are not many grammatical rules surrounding prepositions. English Prepositions usually stand in front of a nouns or a pronoun. But, they are never followed by a verb. Even though prepositions are simple words, some of them have more than one meaning and can be very confusing. To use correct preposition in a sentence, it is crucial to know if the word it relates to is a verb, masculine, feminine, plural or singular noun. In any sentence, it is necessary to use correct preposition to convey the right message.
Many people, including advanced learners of English grammar find prepositions perplexing and complicated. Most people make the mistake of placing the preposition in the wrong place and using it when it is not necessary. If a sentence is clear without the use of preposition, it is best to omit the preposition. Using prepositions correctly in a sentence demonstrates mastery in English grammar.
